Over a hundred years ago, the Hill Country of southern Ohio experienced a booming iron industry. Areas rich in iron ore quickly produced company towns where laborers lived and worked. These men ran charcoal furnaces twenty-four hours a day and were paid in credit that was used for lodging and food from the company store. The Buckeye Furnace is Ohio’s only restored charcoal furnace, and the site not only reveals the incredible process involved in separating impurities from raw iron ore, but also is a testament to the living conditions of company laborers in the nineteenth century. Visitors will embark on a self-guided tour through the buildings, including the charcoal furnace (built into a hillside), a stock shed, and a general store. The Buckeye Furnace State Memorial is open June to October. Saturday & Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm. Wednesday - Friday by appointment. Closed Monday & Tuesday.
