State Memorial Parks:

Buckeye Furnace State Memorial
Where: Wellston, Jackson County

The Buckeye Furnace is Ohio’s only restored charcoal furnace, and the site not only reveals the incredible process involved in separating impurities from raw iron ore, but also is a testament to the living conditions of company laborers in the 19th century. Visitors will embark on a self-guided tour through the buildings, including the charcoal furnace, a stock shed, and a general store.

Leo Petroglyph State Memorial
Where: Leo, Jackson County

The Leo Petroglyph is an outstanding example of prehistoric Native American inscriptions from nearly 1000 years ago. The site hosts 37 incised drawings preserved for future generations and a scenic trail that winds through a sandstone gorge.
Buffington Island Memorial State Park
Where: Portland, Meigs County

The Buffington Island Memorial commemorates the only significant Civil War battle to take place in Ohio. A monument made of broken Ohio glacial boulders overlooks the four acre park. It is a great place to enjoy picnics and learn about the area’s history.
Big Bottom State Memorial Park
Where: Stockport, Morgan County

In 1790, Big Bottom became the site of Ohio's third white settlement, but historians may remember this area best as the location of an Indian massacre in 1791, when 12 settlers were killed. While the park serves today as an excellent site for family outdoor fun, visitors also can catch up on their history by viewing the monument erected in memory of the settlers.

The Morgan County Historical Museum
Where: McConnelsville, Morgan County

This excellent facility will take you through the ages, a comprehensive display of life in the Muskingum River Valley region from the stone age through World War II.  
Robbins Crossing Living History Site
Where: Nelsonville, Athens County

Come to Robbins Crossing to be transported back to Sotheastern Ohio in the 19th Century, where lace was hand-made, meals were cooked over a woodburing stove, and the warmth of the blacksmith's fire was never far away.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway & Museum
Where: Nelsonville, Athens County

All Aboard! This interactive museum offers visitors a chance to climb aboard a historic passenger train and leisurely ride through the beautiful hilly country side of Southeast Ohio. It’s a great way to see the fall foliage or to take a train ride with Santa Claus!
Evelyn True Button House
Where: McConnelsville, Morgan County

Step back in time when you visit the Evelyn True Button House. This Federal-Style home was built in 1836 and is furnished with period pieces from the 1830s though the 1890s.
Carriage House and Blacksmith Shop

: McConnelsville, Morgan County
Discover how Victorians made their way around town and watch blacksmithing demonstrations when you visit the Carriage House and Blacksmith Shop at the Evelyn True Button House.
Athens County Historical Society & Museum
Where
: Athens, Athens County
The Athens County Historical Society and Museum works to collect, preserve, and display Athens County’s past and heritage. The museum has over 40,000 items in its collection and also houses a library of local genealogy and history.
The Chester Courthouse
Where: Chester, Meigs County

Built in 1823, the Chester Courthouse is Ohio’s oldest standing courthouse. The courthouse contains a museum and hosts a variety of festivals, activities, and civil war reenactments. It is also the home of the Chester-Shade Historical Association.

The Lillian E. Jones Museum & Carriage House Genealogy Center
Where: Jackson, Jackson County

The Lillian E. Jones museum is a historic home preserved to reflect by-gone eras. Changing exhibits and a fine collection of antique furnishings, glassware, ceramics, vintage clothing, collectibles and other treasures characterize the home.

The Scioto Valley Round Railroad House
Where: Waverly, Pike County

All shapes and sizes of model trains run throughout the house and outside in warm weather. Visitors can watch the trains zoom by and view various train paraphernalia from a various location across the United States.

Welsh American Heritage Museum
Where: Oak Hill, Jackson County

The Welsh American Heritage Museum focuses on preserving the Welsh traditions and culture characteristics of the area’s early settlers. The museum’s collection includes records, relics, and heirlooms to foster Welsh family ties throughout the world.

Meigs County Museum
Where: Pomeroy, Meigs County

The Meigs County Museum is home to a robust collection of early Meigs County artifacts and archives. Visitors can learn about the region’s history and catch a glimpse of what life was like in Meigs County throughout its rich past.

Pike Heritage Museum
Where: Waverly, Pike County

Housed in the former German Evangelical and Reformed Church built in 1859, the Pike Heritage Museum provides visitors with a unique look at a by-gone era.

Alice’s House Historical Genealogical Society
Where: McArthur, Vinton County

Alice's House serves as the home of the Vinton County Historical and Genealogical Society, and hosts visitors from all over the country who use the house and its records to research family histories.

Rock Hollow Shcool

The Rock Hollow School House is an authentic one room school house built in 1874. It is reminiscent of early school education facilities all over Appalachian Ohio.  It is complete with original McGuffey school books and original furnishings.



Historic Places:

Mound Cemetery
Where: Piketon, Pike County

Many Native American mounds can be found throughout Southeast Ohio. The Mound Cemetery is a prominent example of such prehistoric earthworks. Numerous weathered headstones are evidence that early settlers used the site as a cemetery.


Miner's Memorial Park

Where: McConnelsville, Morgan County

Dedicated in May 2001, this small park in southeastern Ohio's coal mining region honors the contributions coal mining and miners have made to the area. A mammoth 220-cubic-yard, 240-ton bucket from AEP's Big Muskie - the world's largest walking dragline - is the park's centerpiece. Park visitors can walk inside the Big Muskie bucket and read about coal mining and its economic contributions to the area.

 

Ohio-Erie Canal Historic Trail
Where: Waverly, Pike County

This historic trail is designed to be a self -guided tour with emphasis on the history of the Canal and its importance to the development of commerce in Ohio during the 19th century.

Hope Iron Furnace
Where: Lake Hope State Park, Vinton County

A majority of the iron produced in the US from 1830-1900 was produced in Southeast Ohio. The Hope Iron Furnace operated from about 1854 to 1885 producing nearly 15 tons of cast iron per day. Today, the furnace is part of the Lake Hope State Park.
The Barnes Home
Where: Piketon, Pike County

Prehistoric earthwork sites surround the Barnes Home, which attracted a long list of prominent visitors in the 1840s, including Henry Clay, Ephraim Squier and Abraham Lincoln. The last passenger pigeon ever seen in the wild was mounted and displayed in the house between 1900 and 1915.

The Emmitt House
Where: Waverly, Pike County

The Emmitt House was built as a hotel in 1861 by the prominent entrepreneur James Emmitt. Since Mr. Emmitt’s death in 1893, the Emmitt house has changed hands several times. Today, it has been beautifully restored and is home to a celebrated restaurant and pub.

Stockport Mill Inn
Where: Stockport, Morgan County

Once a gristmill built in 1906, the historic Stockport Mill Inn, located on the Muskingum River at Lock and Dam #6, is now a beautifully restored 14-unit inn and Morgan County's "greenest" hotel.  

Vinton Iron Furnace
Where: McArthur, Vinton County

The Vinton Iron Furnace started operation in 1854 and was in operation until 1880. Although the furnace itself is in poor condition, remnants of the boiler house, hot blast house, coke piles, and iron slag are still clearly visible.

Hardware Inn
Where: Stockport, Morgan County
Built in 1851, this building served as the local hardware store for 148 years. Today, the building has been lovingly restored and is now a charming Bed and Breakfast.
