The Ohio-Erie Canal Historic Trail

The Adventure…
Welcome to the Ohio and Eried Canal Historic Trail. The Trail is designed to be a self -guided tour with emphasis on the history of the Canal and its importance to the development of commerce in Ohio during the 19th century. This well-known mode of transportation had an immediate and lasting impact on Pike County, Waverly in particular. Lasting for 70 years before being replaced by other forms of transportation, the canal's remnants are still visible at Waverly's Canal park and areas alongside Ohio 104 between Waverly and Jasper. A bell from one of the first boats to travel into Waverly - the "Governor Worthington" - is on display at the Pike Heritage Museum. The first part of the Trail is gravel. Visitors using wheelchairs or walkers may find it easier to turn right off of Rt. 335 into the group pick-up lot, park there and take the trail in reverse, ending at the Canal Boat site.A Canal Explorer Certificate and a store discount coupon is available to everyone finishing the trail. Certificates may be picked up at the Pike County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 12455 St. R. 104 in Waverly, phone number 740-947-9650.The trail is a joint venture of Bristol Village, the Pike County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pike County Rotary Club and the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Waverly. Major Donors are: First National Bank of Waverly, USEC, Inc., Appalachian Regional Commission.
