July 2008:

The Ohio-Erie Canal Historic Trail opens in Waverly

Visitors can learn more about the canal system that once ran through Southeast Ohio and how it impacted the region. The Trail is designed to be a self -guided tour with emphasis on the history of the Canal and its importance to the development of commerce in Ohio during the 19th century.

The kick-off celebration took place on July 12th during the Waverly Street Festival. The Ohio Erie Canal Historic Trail project is a joint venture of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Governor's Office of Appalachia, Rensselaerville Institute, Bristol Village, The Pike County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Pike County Rotary Club and the City of Waverly Parks and Recreation Department. The project will utilize an existing half mile paved trail along the canal bed with water in the canal most of the way.
