Hartman Mound

The Adventure…

Between 1000 B.C. and 200 A.D., Athens County was home to the Adena Indians, a hunter-gatherer society that preceded the Hopewells and other Native American cultures. The Plains, just north of Athens in Athens County, was the second largest center of Adena activity in Ohio.  When white settlers arrived in the 1800s, they found at least 30 mounds there. Over the years most of the mounds have been destroyed. Excavations of the mounds have unearthed pottery, jewelry, and tools. The Hartman Mound is the largest mound in The Plains never to have been excavated and is 40 feet high and 140 feet in diameter. The Connett Mound is another prime example of such earthworks.

Getting There’s Half the Adventure…

The Hartman Mound in located on Mound Street in The Plains. Exit off of US Route 33 onto Plains Road in The Plains and then take the first right (Mound Street). The Hartman Mound is a short distance down Mound Street. Continue down Mound Street and turn right onto Adena Drive to see the Connett Mound.
