Cooper Hollow Wildlife Area

The Adventure…

Cooper Hollow Wildlife Area is a 5,421-acre park located just south of Jackson. Characterized by rolling hills, meandering creeks, and tranquil ponds, the park is a great place for hiking, fishing, and hunting. Evidence of the Industrial Revolution is also present at Cooper Hollow Wildlife Area. Cooper Hollow is located in an area known as the Hanging Rock Region. During the 19th century, the Hanging Rock Iron Region was the second largest producer of iron for our young nation. The furnaces were operated on the resources from the surrounding area. The required iron ore was mined by oxen from the underlying sandstone and limestone. The trees were cut and burned to produce charcoal to fire the furnace. The old ore pits are still quite noticeable near the ridges throughout the wildlife area. The importance of the Hanging Rock Region has since dissipated but it legacy can still be seen. The stone remnants of the old Madison Iron Furnace still stand near the park headquarters. Large mouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill are common catches. Hunters frequently catch squirrel, ruffed grouse, white-tail deer, wild turkey, and a variety of waterfowl.
