Hockhocking Adena Bikeway
The Adventure…
The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is a 19-mile paved trail winding along the Hocking River. Stretching from Athens to Nelsonville, the trail is named in honor of the region’s first inhabitants who lived in the Hocking Valley over 2,000 years ago – the Adena. The name Hockhocking – meaning “bottleneck” or “twisted” – was the Native American name for the Hocking River. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is located on the old Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad bed which was constructed in the late 1800s. Before that it was a towpath alongside the Hocking Canal. The canal was built in the mid-1800s and moved agricultural products and other goods to Carroll, Ohio, where the goods could then continue their journey down the Ohio-Erie Canal. The canal had 26 locks, seven culverts, and one aqueduct crossing Monday Creek south of Nelsonville. Today, strolling along the Hocking River, visitors get a glimpse of both the nature and history of the region.

Getting there’s Half the Adventure…
The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway runs from Athens to Nelsonville. There are several entrance points where parking is available. The first entrance is located at the East State Street Recreation Area on East State Street in Athens (Mile 0). The second is located along the West State Street ball fields on West State Street in Athens (Mile 4). The third is located off of State Route 682 in The Plains (Mile 10.2). And the fourth is located at Robbins Crossing (part of Hocking College) on Hocking Parkway in Nelsonville (Mile 16.4).
