Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve

The Adventure…

Lake Katharine is a “must see” adventure. It’s a wonderful place for true nature lovers because Ohio’s State Nature Preserves are primarily intended for passive recreation, nature observation, research, and education. The park is a magnificent natural area consisting of nearly 2,000 acres of rolling wooded hills, dense vegetation, and several miles of hiking trails. The rich Appalachian forest is cut by three deep ravines. These ravines are filled with magnolias, eastern hemlock, sweet gum, birch, and beech. The Preserve is also home to a variety of diverse spring wildflower, rare bigleaf and umbrella magnolias, and stunning sandstone cliffs. One of the preserve’s main focal points is its clear water lake which is surrounded by sandstone cliffs. Along Calico Brush Trail there is a stunning display of wild flowers in late April and early May, making it a popular spring hike. The Pine Ridge Trail crosses Rock Run offering hikers a unique glimpse of the babbling creek that supplies Lake Katharine’s sparkling water. Lake Katharine truly is a great place to escape the buzz of everyday life and rejuvenate your spirit.
